Chicken Life Cycle

Shannon | 2 Comments

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know I have a thing for chickens! I love living on the farm and sharing my love of back-to-the-basics living with kids. So when we added chickens to our property, I did a lot of research and made a kid-friendly way to share the info and responsibility of caring for our chicks! I can’t wait until spring officially arrives and we can hatch our new batch of chicks! Be sure to follow me on Instagram for cuteness overload!

Chicken Life Cycle Printables

I created this pack while teaching preschool, but was actually able to use the STEM activity with my third graders, as well! Here’s a look at the activities that can be used for any lower elementary grade.

STEM Activity

This is definitely my favorite part of this pack!  Which weighs more, a chick or an egg?  Students can use real objects to determine what weighs more or less than a freshly hatched chick! Each poster tells the weight of a chicken during each stage of life.  Real photos help students visualize the everyday objects that represent the weights. Also on the posters are a list of common objects that are lighter than and heavier than the chicken life stage. Provide some of these objects along with a balance scale for students to experiment and determine for themselves what classroom objects weigh more or less than a newborn chick!

Writing Prompts and Vocabulary Cards

There are 8 wall word cards featuring images and chicken vocabulary. These cards are perfect for a writing center! They can be laminated for young students to trace with dry erase markers. Older students can refer to the cards for spelling for their own writing pieces.
Two writing prompt worksheets with drawing space are also included. These can be used as optional work in a preschool or kindergarten writing center, or a fun seat work option in elementary school.

Chicken Life Cycle Posters

11 Chicken life cycle posters show real photos and a short description of each phase of the life cycle to really bring the amazing journey of a chick to life! New vocabulary is underlined. These are perfect for a read-aloud to your class to introduce them to the chicken life cycle.
5 of the photos are also down-sized and formatted to print with numbers on the back. Your kids can arrange the photos in order according to the chicken life cycle, then self check and practice number recognition by flipping the cards over.
There’s even a worksheet for kids to cut and paste pictures of the chicken life cycle in order.

Kindergarten and Preschool Activities

Chicken Emergent Reader

Next is an emergent reader book. I love these type of books because the kids get something they can create and show off, which makes them even more excited to read. And when they do read this book, they’re not only practice sight words and tracking print, they’re also reviewing the life cycle of a chicken. It’s fine motor skills, literacy, and science all in one!

Block Center Posters

Here’s one more part of the pack that is probably geared more towards preschool and kindergarten: an invitation to build!

Introduce these posters to your students and then simply hang them posters in your block center and watch their STEM skills grow!

Letter Matching Cards

These cards show a baby chick and his egg! Each chick has a capital letter and each egg has a lowercase letter.
Little learners have fun matching the chicks to their eggs. Plus, the puzzles have a variety of zig zags so that each card only fits together with 4 other cards, which helps students self-correct any errors.

Number Play-Doh Mats

These Play-Doh mats are a fun way to use sensory play to practice numbers! Each mat has a picture of a hen and nest. The number on the nest tells the child how many eggs to make for the hen. A ten frame is in the top corner of the mat to help the child make sense of the written number. This pack includes Play-Doh mats for the numbers 1-20.

My husband and I have been together since we were 14! We are blessed to have found each other so young and seem to have a bond that not many other couples share. He listens to me ramble on about whatever thing I may be passionate about each week, and is always there to lift me up when I'm down.
