Prepping the Letter Sounds Printables
First, you obviously need to print the printables. Read my post here about how I print so much in color and actually save money!
Next, I suggest laminating the pieces so they’re more durable. This is the laminator I have been using for 5 years, and it’s still going strong!
Finally, cut the pieces apart into slices for your kids to reassemble.
TIP: Use a variety of zig zags, curves, and straight lines to cut the slices. This will make every pizza an unique puzzle, which will help your child see when a slice is incorrect.
How to Play
To use these phonological awareness puzzles, simply provide 2-3 pizzas for your child or students to reassemble! They will use their problem solving skills and knowledge of the letter sounds to group the pizzas back together.
Say the letter and pictures out loud, emphasizing their beginning sounds. Encourage your child to do the same. This will set good habits for down the road when they’re learning to read and write.
Eventually your student will more and more familiar with the letter sounds. This is when you can add in more pizzas at a time to make the puzzles more challenging.
Play is the best way to get children learning. Keep the game fun by adding in pizza pans, plates, tablecloths, chef’s hats, etc. to set the scene!
