How to Easily Get Students Interested in Writing

Shannon | No Comments

Getting young students in preschool or kindergarten interested in writing can be a huge challenge. Especially when they’re not used to sitting at a table and working for any length of time.

Fortunately, there is one topic every student LOVES to talk about: themselves!

Seriously, just think about how many times a day are you interrupted for someone to share some irrelevant information about their personal life.

These “All About Me” worksheets are the perfect way to get to get your students working towards writing standards. They’re also a great way to get to know each other during the first few weeks back to school!

All About Me Worksheets

These worksheets are the perfect way for each student to express themselves as individuals AND work on beginner writing skills.

Writing skills begin with drawing and dictating in preschool and kindergarten. These foundational skills encourage creativity and the writing process.

Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

Since most 3-6 year olds can’t totally read or write on their own, these printables use lots of images to help students understand what they need to do.

Some worksheets require help from the teacher. Many students will recognize the word “Name,” but you will probably have to dictate the other parts of the worksheet and work through them together.

You can use one or more of these worksheets daily for the first few days of school to create an All About Me book. Or you can use it just for warming up students to the work they’ll be doing this year.

After all, I’ve never met a student who didn’t need practice in following directions. Or who didn’t like to color. These worksheets are great for both of those!

Many of the worksheets include lines for writing. You may have to fill out these lines with words the students dictate to you. Or, you could write the word on scratch paper and let them write them on the lines.

Some worksheets can be used during special times of year, instead, like birthdays or a community helper unit.

Each worksheet has a general theme, like “My School,” or “My Favorites.”

Every opportunity we give our students to express and take pride in their individuality goes toward building their self-image.

These worksheets give plenty of opportunities for students to express themselves through the writing process. And just imagine how proud parents will be when students bring their work home!

You can even use these worksheets as an easy (or last minute) bulletin board display for Open House night.

And one of the best things about this worksheet pack is that it’s NO PREP for you! You have enough on your mind getting ready for the coming school year. Here’s one thing to check off your list. Just print, copy, and DONE!

My husband and I have been together since we were 14! We are blessed to have found each other so young and seem to have a bond that not many other couples share. He listens to me ramble on about whatever thing I may be passionate about each week, and is always there to lift me up when I'm down.

Tell me about your supporters in the comments! I know that being a mom or teacher are HARD and stressful and we all need someone to keep us sane.
