Teach Story Retelling with Nursery Rhymes

Shannon | No Comments

Story retelling is a preschool and early elementary skill that should be practiced often.  Here’s some Nursery Rhymes worksheets to help your students master their story retelling skills!

Teach Story Retelling with Nursery Rhymes

Retelling familiar stories is both a Common Core Kindergarten standard and included in Pennsylvania’s Early Learning Standards for Preschool.

It’s important that as teachers, we make sure we’re teaching according to the standards in order to set the stage for future learning.

However, it’s equally important as early childhood educators that we are teaching the way that children learn best – through fun and play.

I’m passionate about allowing children to learn at their own pace and don’t consider letter recognition to be a rite of passage into kindergarten.  You can read more in my post Preschool Learning: Are Letters Really Important?

But I also believe there is a time and place for worksheets in preschool classroom.  Short periods of table work help kids learn to focus, work hard, follow directions, and complete tasks.  Read more in my post The Only Way to Use Worksheets in Preschool.

These nursery rhyme worksheets are the perfect way to practice story retelling.  Your students will love coloring, cutting, and gluing these worksheets!  They’ll practice fine motor skills and be proud of their literacy abilities when they can read these common nursery rhymes to mom and dad!

No Prep Preschool Worksheets

I am a busy daycare provider and mom, so it’s important to me that my classwork require as little prep as possible!

These nursery rhyme worksheets are NO PREP for you.  The students will do all the work!

First, read the nursery rhyme aloud with your class.  Some students may be able to follow along with you as you read.  Repeat the nursery rhyme a few times for any kids who aren’t already familiar with the poems.

I like to wait until we’re finished with the gluing to give my kids the go ahead to color.  That way, we can all glue our pictures at the same time while we go through the nursery rhyme again.  At the end, the ones who want to color can stay at the table while the other kids are dismissed to go play.

My husband and I have been together since we were 14! We are blessed to have found each other so young and seem to have a bond that not many other couples share. He listens to me ramble on about whatever thing I may be passionate about each week, and is always there to lift me up when I'm down.

Tell me about your supporters in the comments! I know that being a mom or teacher are HARD and stressful and we all need someone to keep us sane.
